Boulder County Reaffirms Support for Assault Weapons Ban During Gun Violence Awareness Month

The Boulder County Commissioners released a proclamation last week in conjunction with National Gun Violence Awareness Day (June 5) and Wear Orange Weekend (June 5–7) that called for county residents to honor the lives of victims and survivors of gun violence by wearing orange. The proclamation was made during a June 2 meeting of the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners and was published as a news release by Boulder County on June 5.

The Board of Boulder County Commissioners has declared June as Gun Violence Awareness and Prevention Month since 2022. During the month of June, the commissioners and other communities across the county “consider the passage of local gun violence prevention ordinances to protect the safety of children and adults in the community.” Each year, the commissioners encourage community members to wear orange during Wear Orange Weekend.

“We make this proclamation because the United States suffers from an epidemic of gun violence unparalleled in any other developed nation,” the commissioners said in their 2026 proclamation. “Almost 40,000 people died as a result of gun violence last year, and the United States ranks highest of all wealthy nations for gun-related deaths.”…
