Longmont’s Main Street is no stranger to cruising. Despite the ban on the leisure activity in certain blocks of the city, drivers meet up every July to enjoy a night of cruising through downtown — even with an ordinance prohibiting it.
This summer, the typical, unauthorized cruise night was replaced by a public celebration of the tradition. Saturday was designated “Longmont Cruise Night” by the Longmont City Council, turning the not-so-secret event into an evening supported by both city officials and car enthusiasts.
Some of those enthusiasts shared that the formal approval serves as an invitation to new participants.
“I know a few people that are coming that normally do not come,” Mead resident Dave Harfst said of Saturday’s Cruise Night.
Harfst remembers cruising on Main Street in the 1980s. He lived in Arvada at the time, he said, but would come up to Longmont for the activity. His favorite aspect of the hobby, both then and now, is the camaraderie…
