For Chris and Emily Sandoval, the decision to tear out part of their front lawn came down to a simple question: Why keep watering grass no one uses?
The couple stood outside their Skylark Court home on a sweltering July morning as a Resource Central crew sliced away a 200-square-foot section of sod in less than an hour, rolling it up like a carpet before hauling it away to be composted. By fall, the sloped patch of grass will be replaced with a “Garden in a Box,” featuring drought-tolerant native plants designed to use a fraction of the water required by traditional turf.
“We had so many reasons to do this,” Emily Sandoval said. “One is, first and foremost, to conserve water. It’s a big part of our budget in the summer to keep our lawn green.”…
