A brand-new, bus-sized bookmobile is officially rolling through Manatee County, bringing books, Wi-Fi and public programming to residents who live far from the county’s seven library branches. The vehicle, funded through a $587,100 purchase approved by county commissioners, is meant to close a stubborn service gap in a county that has grown far faster than its library system.
According to Manatee County, Florida Government, the new bookmobile is designed to bring “books, resources, and the joy of reading directly into the community.” Commissioner Amanda Ballard recently joined Meaghan Darling, the county’s Library Outreach and Mobile Services Supervisor, on ABC7 Sarasota to talk up the launch, with more scheduling details expected soon from the library system. Darling leads the dedicated mobile team that will handle programming and stops for the new coach, according to Manatee County Government.
The purchase itself dates back to March 2024, when the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners approved buying the custom coach from North Carolina-based Matthews Specialty Vehicles, as reported by Your Observer. County commissioners authorized the purchase as a way to expand library access quickly, without waiting years for new buildings to go up.
