Sarasota-Based Petrichor Is Expanding Into Mushroom-Infused Drinks

Spare Room, Big Dream

Petrichor’s origin story starts where few businesses do: a spare bedroom filled with mushrooms. Not those kinds of mushrooms—gourmet varieties like lion’s mane and oyster. During the pandemic, longtime friends Micheal Shea and Howard Schmidt applied their years of organic farming experience to the business, first selling homegrown fungi at local farmers markets before expanding into a shipping-container mushroom farm and an in-house beverage production facility capable of canning thousands of drinks a day. In October 2025, they opened Petrichor Café, a true hidden gem tucked into Northgate, off U.S. 301. Inside, customers can sip ceremonial-grade matcha (powdered green tea) or specialty drinks like a white chocolate pistachio latte while also browsing tinctures, fresh mushrooms, cannabis beverages and books.

Petrichor’s flagship drink, Lightning, is a sparkling lemon-blueberry seltzer containing a blend of lion’s mane and cordyceps mushrooms, plus botanical terpenes (plant-designed aromas, often found in herbs and citrus) to support focus and mood. It’s caffeine-free, non-alcoholic, energizing without the jitters and euphoric without the comedown. Next in Petrichor’s lineup is Thunder, made with the bean and fruit from both coffee and cacao, as well as chaga mushroom and lion’s mane. It’ll boast similarly fruity seltzer vibes, with a nuanced, rich undertone from the coffee and cacao and less than 100 mg of caffeine…
