SARASOTA, Fla. — The Sarasota County Courthouse sees justice handed down daily as offenders receive their sentences. But for families mourning lives stolen by violence, no prison term can ever truly fill the void left behind.
To provide comfort and honor those legacies, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Homicide Bereavement Support Group on Friday for their annual memorial ceremony—creating a solemn gathering space for grieving families to unite and remember.
Remembering Loved Ones Taken Too Soon
Among those in attendance was Luis Reyes, whose husband, Alain Sierra, was killed in downtown Sarasota after stepping into the line of fire to shield Reyes from danger. While Sierra’s killer is now serving a life sentence, Reyes joined other families Friday to keep his husband’s memory and courage alive.
For other attendees, the fight for answers remains ongoing. The family of Steven Colon marked the somber milestone of just over one year since his death in a shooting. According to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office detective records, Colon’s death was deemed justified under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
