A 29-year-old Florida mother has been charged after her 4-year-old son found a loaded handgun inside her purse and fatally shot himself, authorities said.
Diamond Phillips faces a charge of culpable negligence involving a firearm, according to Manatee County court records. Authorities have not publicly identified the child.
Deputies responded in June to a Sarasota home, where Phillips and the boy’s grandmother confirmed the child had shot himself “using the mother’s gun,” according to an arrest affidavit. Emergency responders treated the boy, but he died from his injuries that day…
