Fire Sparks on Brooklyn Bridge During July 4th Fireworks Show

During the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks display on New York City’s East River, a small fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge, temporarily drawing emergency responders’ attention amid the celebration.

Footage captured smoke rising from the middle section of the iconic bridge as fireworks continued to light up the sky. The New York Fire Department reported that the fire, described as a “rubbish fire,” started around 9:40 p.m. on the Manhattan-bound side in the traffic lanes, shortly after the fireworks concluded. Fire crews quickly responded with two engines and extinguished the blaze without incident.

An NYPD spokesperson reassured the public, explaining that such fires are not unexpected during fireworks events and emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe standoff distance throughout the show.

This year’s Macy’s fireworks marked America’s 250th birthday with an expanded presentation, featuring barges on both the Hudson and East Rivers to create simultaneous displays for spectators. Due to looming severe thunderstorms, organizers moved the start time up to 9:02 p.m. from the originally scheduled 9:25 p.m., aiming to complete the event before the weather worsened.

Meanwhile, severe weather also disrupted Independence Day celebrations in Washington, D.C. The Great American State Fair, which had been set to host President Donald Trump’s 9:45 p.m. speech and fireworks show on the National Mall, faced evacuation due to approaching storms. Attendees were instructed to seek shelter in vehicles or nearby buildings as officials issued multiple warnings about the risk of damaging winds and lightning.

Billboards and social media posts communicated delays and urged the public to follow safety directions. As of late evening, organizers had not confirmed when the event would resume or whether the president’s speech would proceed.

Meteorologists warned of severe thunderstorms capable of producing gusts up to 70 to 80 mph, heavy rain, and frequent lightning, with watches in effect until 10 p.m. These conditions posed significant risks, including power outages and hazardous travel.

Freedom250, the event’s organizing body, emphasized that guest safety was the priority and coordinated with multiple agencies to manage the evacuation and provide shelter in nearby government buildings and museums. They urged calm and advised attendees to stay updated through official channels.

While New York’s celebration proceeded with minor disruption, the unfolding weather in the nation’s capital underscored the challenges of managing large-scale public events amid unpredictable conditions on this landmark holiday.
