Mystery lung disease grips 2 NYC neighborhoods as cases of fatal infection spike

Two popular neighborhoods in New York City are reporting rising cases of Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia, and health officials have asked residents to exercise caution.

The cases have been reported in areas like Central Park and the Upper East Side, and as many as 18 cases have been recorded so far. That’s a huge jump from the two cases reported last week by the health department of the city.

No deaths have been reported so far, and Legionnaires’ disease kills about one in 10 patients on average…
