Bronx Terminal Market sits on the Harlem River in the Bronx, New York, just south of Yankee Stadium. The city built it as a wholesale food market, and the city still owns the ground.
The market opened in 1929 and moved fruit and vegetables into the Bronx for decades. By the 2000s its wholesalers sold tropical produce to small groceries in the South Bronx and Harlem.
In 2006 the city approved a big-box retail center for the site, so the wholesalers had to go. They were out by June. No new market was built for them, though they’d asked to move to one together…
