Video: Man jumps on car trying to stop alleged Rolex thief he met on Facebook Marketplace

MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (PIX11) — A Long Island man attempting to sell a Rolex watch on Facebook Marketplace was seen on video jumping on the hood of the car of an alleged thief, police said.

Steve Mauro , 45, set up the meeting to sell the watch in front of his home for $8,000.

Mauro told PIX11 News he’s sold on Facebook Marketplace dozens of times before with no problem. Mauro said the suspect seemed legitimate at first.

“He really asked all the right questions, he was very thorough,” he said.

After the suspect looked the watch over, he agreed to buy it and asked Mauro to walk over to his car to get the money, police said.

Mauro tried to get into the suspect’s car, but the passenger door was locked. Mauro told police he tried to run to the driver’s side of the vehicle. That’s when police said the suspect put his car in reverse before driving forward, hitting Mauro and knocking him to the ground. He got back up and jumped on the hood of the suspect’s car before falling off as the suspect drove away with the Rolex.
