At least 16 injured after ‘major explosion’ at NYC shipyard

A fire followed by a “major explosion” at a New York City shipyard has left at least 16 people injured, according to city fire department officials.

The blast happened at about 4:20 p.m. local time at a shipyard on Staten Island, the city’s southernmost borough. The explosion happened after firefighters were called to the scene at 3:30 p.m. after reports of workers being trapped in a confined space, according to FDNY.
