Severe storms could bring flooding to NYC over the weekend

NEW YORK, N.Y. (PIX11) — Storm watches and travel advisories have been put into effect across New York City and parts of the lower Hudson Valley ahead of storms expected to batter the area Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management has issued a travel advisory for Saturday through Sunday as the National Weather Service forecasts heavy rain, gusty winds and potential severe thunderstorms for the five boroughs over the weekend. The heaviest rain is expected between 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to the NYCEM, rainfall rates are expected to remain below 0.2 inches per hour for most of the event but could briefly reach up to 2 inches per hour during heavier downpours. Total rainfall is expected to range from 0.25 to 1.5 inches.

Widespread flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying and poor-drainage areas, with a low risk of localized flash flooding, said the NYCEM. Ponding on roadways may develop during periods of heavy rain and in locations where storm drains are clogged.
