Couple retraces historic Erie Canal journey in inflatable camping boat

POUGHKEEPSIE — A unique watercraft has been sharing the Hudson River waters this month with barges, schooners, pontoon boats and other vessels: a 13-foot inflatable, partly solar-powered boat manned by newlyweds Richard Scotten and Jennifer Groves.

They’ve been calling their boat home for the past month, but the couple’s six-week voyage along the Erie Canal and down the Hudson River, from Buffalo to New York City, began after they encountered some unexpected problems with their other home — a different sort of motorized abode.

After living in Queens for several years, Scotten, 42, who owns a software company, and Groves, 40, a classically trained singer from Pawling, decided to go on an adventure and moved into a fifth-wheel RV. But earlier this year, the RV developed problems and had to be sent to a manufacturer in Indiana for repairs for several weeks…
