NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – More people could soon be eligible to apply for the NYPD thanks to new legislation in the City Council.
The new law, proposed by City Council Member Amanda Farías, would allow people up to age 43 to apply, an increase from the previous age limit of 35 years old. It aligns New York City with a similar state law that became effective in September 2025.

The law also includes special exemptions for veterans, who can remove up to 6 years from their effective age to apply. For example, a 48-year-old veteran who served a full 6 years could apply to the NYPD.
“[This legislation] grew directly from a conversation I had with my local Precinct Council about what factors may have been preventing people from choosing a career with the NYPD,” Farías said. “Raising the maximum examination age to bolster the NYPD’s broader recruitment efforts expands access to a stable public-service career and allows the City to consider a wider pool of qualified candidates.”…
