STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City has lost 200,000 Black residents over the last few decades, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a demographic shift he described as a “reversal of the Great Migration” during an interview with The Root.
In the interview, Mamdani stated that the population decline is centered around young people and growing families who can no longer afford the city, with the population of Black children and teenagers dropping 19% between 2010 and 2019.
“We talk about the affordability agenda. We talk about the cost of living crisis. Every New Yorker experiences it, but it is not evenly experienced,” Mamdani said. “And Black New Yorkers have borne the brunt of this crisis.”…
