Bronx man gets jail time for role in ‘grandparents’ mail scheme

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A man originally from Bronx, NY was sentenced on Thursday for his role in a “grandparents’ mail scheme” based in the Dominican Republic.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Friday that Yeurys Peguero-Rosario, age 25, of Bronx, NY, was sentenced on Thursday, January 25, 2024, to 1 year and 9 months in prison, to be followed by a three-year term of supervised release, for his role as a courier in a Dominican Republic-based “grandparents” fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims from states across the country.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, from around June 2020 to October 2020, Peguero-Rosario along with a group of men from Bronx, NY, regularly traveled from New York City to locations in Pennsylvania to retrieve UPS and Fed Ex packages containing thousands of dollars in cash.
