New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani‘s wife said she feels “shame” over recently resurfaced social media posts she reportedly made as a teenager, which included racial slurs and celebrated Palestinian militants from a group designated as terrorist in the U.S.
Rama Duwaji told art site Hyperallergic, in an interview published on Wednesday, that she is “truly sorry” for posting messages with language that “is so harmful to others,” though she did not specify which posts she was referring to.
Newsweek contacted Mamdani’s press office for comment via email on Thursday outside of regular working hours.
Why It Matters
Mamdani began serving as New York City’s first Muslim and democratic socialist mayor in January. Duwaji faced criticism after The Washington Free Beaconpublished years-old social media posts made by an account appearing to have belonged to her.
