STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Christ Church New Brighton opened its doors to the public Saturday as part of the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s 16th annual Sacred Sites Open House, a free statewide program offering rare access to religious buildings across New York.
The church at 76 Franklin Ave. welcomed visitors throughout the day, serving refreshments and displaying photos and videos of past musical activities.
“Most people never see the inside of these buildings; they only see them from the outside,” said Peg Breen, president of the Landmarks Conservancy. “This lets people into the treasures in their hometown.”
Church members Peter Kapla and Alleida Mitchell were on hand to welcome visitors. Music director and organist Andrew Kilkenny gave a recital featuring music by Johann Sebastian Bach, William Boyce, Jean-Francois Dandrieu, Philip Morre, Charles-Marie Widor and John Philip Sousa…
