BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A baby penguin has hatched at the Aquarium of Niagara, and you can help choose its name.
The aquarium is asking for the public’s help to decide on a name for the female Humboldt penguin chick. Animal lovers can vote on the names listed below, all inspired by influential women with a Western New York connection.
- Annie: inspired by Annie Edson Taylor, the first woman to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
- Burnett: honoring Mary Burnett Talbert, a Buffalo native who helped create the Niagara Movement, which later became the NAACP.
- Iris: inspired by one of the Goo Goo Dolls’ hit songs.
- Theodosia: inspired by Theodosia Burr, former Vice President Aaron Burr’s daughter. Theodosia and her husband were the first couple recorded to have spent their honeymoon in Niagara Falls.
The chick currently resides in a nest with her parents. Although visitors may not always spot her at the aquarium’s public gallery, they might catch a glimpse of her as she grows and explores beyond her nest.
Voting will end on June 14, and the winner will be announced on June 15.
