BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Runners and walkers from across Western New York headed to the Hamburg Fairgrounds on Saturday for the 17th annual Take a Breath for Life 5k.
The event, which is open to participants ages six and up, features raffle baskets and other prizes, food and drinks, and live music, with the goal of raising funds and awareness for the nearly 2.4 million New Yorkers who suffer from lung disease.
“Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer and the least funded federally, so, I’m a lung cancer survivor, and once I was diagnosed, I decided I needed to do something to bring awareness,” Take a Breath for Life Foundation Co-founder Michelle McMahon said. “My family and friends and I got together and we said, ‘We need to bring awareness and try to stop the stigma,’ a lot of people think that if you’re a smoker that you get lung cancer; I’m a never smoker and it still affects everyone.”…
