BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Lackawanna man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for participating in a kidnapping scheme where he and his father attempted to force his sister into an arranged marriage, the United States Attorney’s Office said Thursday.
Adham Abughanem, 29, was convicted of conspiracy to kidnap a person in a foreign country and kidnapping conspiracy in December 2024. His father, Khaled Abughanem, was previously sentenced to 17 years in prison for his involvement in the scheme.
Officials said that the two men flew from Buffalo to Mexico to kidnap the female relative in September 2021. Between September 2021 and April 2023, the two conspired to transport the woman to Egypt and then to Yemen, where she was confined for 16 months “with the purpose of marrying her to a man not of her choosing.”…
