Buffalo Public announces plan to close eight schools

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo Public Schools announced a restructuring plan Friday that would include the closure of eight schools starting in the 2027-2028 school year.

According to a statement from Buffalo Public Schools, the closures would include:

  • PS 59 Dr. Charles R. Drew Science
  • PS 131 Academy School @ 86
  • PS 366 Research Laboratory High School
  • PS 33 Bilingual Center
  • PS 82 Ronald Peoples School of Scholars
  • PS 208 Riverside Academy
  • PS 309 East High School
  • PS 90 Early Childhood Center

BPS said that five of the listed schools will be repurposed, while PS 59, PS 131, and Research Laboratory High School PS 366 will close permanently.

The decision, which the district said is a part of its four-year fiscal stability plan, has been attributed to several factors, including declining enrollment, rising operating costs, and staffing shortages. BPS said the move will save the district $244 million…
