AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Families with loved ones in a massive senior living apartment building in Amherst are concerned about living conditions tenants inside have been dealing with.
Those conditions include water damage inside apartments, as well as, possible mold, peeling paint and a leaky roof at St. Mary’s Apartments.
News 4 received pictures from inside the property sent to us from a concerned family member. Andrea Wawro says her mother-in-law has been here for nearly two years.
Overall Andrea says her mother-in-law likes it here, likes the senior living community but a leaky roof has not been fixed for months and Andrea has concerns about the safety and health of residents inside.
“I think there’s a mismanagement of something or Amherst needs to be able to say you know what this is going to be a senior home for how many number of years, they deserve to live in a place that’s not going to have water damage,” Wawro said.
News 4 contacted the Town of Amherst Building Department to get answers about the situation. Officials say roughly a year ago, they found minor water damage in a ceiling here resulting in a violation notice, but actually fixing the roof is a project that’s been tied up in the Amherst Historic Preservation Commission because this property is a local landmark.
