Man pleads guilty to tampering with railroad switch

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Niagara Falls man is facing up to 20 years in prison and a potential $250,000 fine for tampering with railroad switches last year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Charles Wilson, 66, pleaded guilty to damaging or impairing the operation of a train control system, officials said. Officials said in June 2025, Wilson replaced switch locks at the CSX Railyard on two separate occasions, delaying an Amtrak passenger train. On July 1, 2025, Wilson moved a CSX railyard switch into a new position after a train transporting hazardous materials had passed the switch, officials said.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 14.
