South Walton had lost the Florida 3A State Championship Game two years in a row. They arrived at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers on May 14 with a 29-4 record, a No. 11 national ranking from MaxPreps, and the kind of hunger that only back-to-back runner-up finishes can produce. They were not going home empty-handed again.
With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, bases loaded and one out against North Broward, South Walton called the suicide squeeze. Runner Declan Fowler broke for home before the pitch even reached the plate. Hudson Quinn laid down a perfect bunt between the pitcher and the third baseman. Fowler scored. Ballgame. State champions. And then the chaos started.
