INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Governor Mike Braun is once more extending the gas tax holiday that has kept the state’s average price of gasoline low despite the ongoing war in Iran raising prices at the pump across the breadth of the United States.
The bell was set to toll on Braun’s latest gas tax holiday at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. Gas prices were expected to surge up to 60 cents in the following days once the taxes were back in place. Since May, the governor has kept prices lower than most any other state by suspending both the gas excise tax and the gas usage tax.
Braun: State Comptroller to reimburse entities for revenues missed during gas tax holiday
Many feared Thursday was the end of the line for the wallet relief as Braun’s unilateral authority to suspend the taxes was capped at 120 days. This meant that without state legislators returning to the statehouse early for a special session, Braun reportedly did not have the authority to extend the tax holiday past Aug. 6.
Despite this hurdle, Braun announced on Wednesday that the gas tax holiday would continue in Indiana through an additional energy emergency order that takes effect Aug. 7. The suspension lasts through Sept. 5…
