Wind gusts topping 100 mph whipped through northern Indiana on Tuesday. What is now a suspected derecho from a line of storms originating in Iowa has left behind flattened corn and flooding in localized regions.
“In spots, the corn is flat lodged over,” said Carl Joern, Pioneer agronomist in northwest Indiana. “Remember, it always looks the worst shortly after a storm. Give it some time to show life and start standing back up.”
A different story
This storm system is not much different than the one that tore through the region in late June, which left drowned-out spots in its wake. However, plant growth stages then versus now make for a different story when assessing the lasting effects of the recent storm damage.
