NC DOJ, DEQ sue chemical packaging company Brenntag over contaminated Durham creek

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Months after a report found that a creek in Durham was contaminated, state officials are taking legal action against an international corporation.

Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced Monday that a joint lawsuit with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality against chemical packaging manufacturer Brenntag, accusing the company of “illegally discharging contaminants into state waters.”

According to NCDEQ, after receiving an anonymous complaint in 2025 about chemical dumping at Brenntag’s Durham facility, officials visited the site. They said they saw wet and dry chemicals like petroleum-based lubricants, solvents, acids, and bases leaking out of the containers where the chemicals were stored.
