County seeks solutions as Wake South Landfill nears capacity in 2040

APEX, N.C. — Wake County is looking for solutions as the Wake South Landfill near Apex and Holly Springs continues to fill up.

County leaders said the site is expected to reach capacity by 2040, but recent trends show it could happen sooner.

“If you look at our records of waste, it spiked in 2020 and 2021. It came down for a couple of years and now it has started to pick back up,” said solid waste director for Wake County John Roberson. “The number is in the 500,000-tons-a-year range, about 1,600 to 2,000 tons per day.”…
