Creech solid on mound for Post 13 despite Area I championship loss

GARNER — After surviving its North Carolina American Legion Baseball Area I East Division championship series with a game 5 win over Pitt County Post 39 on Friday, July 17, Wilson Post 13’s pitching was in disarray, to say the least, with not many seasoned arms available for Saturday’s game at Area I West champion Garner Post 232 to determine the overall Area I crown and top seed at the N.C. American Legion Baseball tournament in Gastonia this weekend for which both teams have qualified.

Wilson lost to Garner for the third time this season but Creech’s mound performance in his first appearance in well over a month made the 4-0 win by Post 232 a little easier to swallow. With few mound options available for Wilson head coach Matt Ballance after the exhausting East finals, Creech worked 5 1/3 innings against the No. 1-ranked team in the state. The right-hander took the loss after giving up all four runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks. Creech struck out six before handing the ball to Hyland Wheeler, another seldom-used bullpen option this season, to get the last two outs in the sixth.

Creech, normally an infielder both this summer in Wilson and as a rising sophomore on the developmental squad at NCAA Division III Methodist University, reprised his mound role from the 2025 season when the Greene Central High graduate was in the rotation for Post 13…
