For some families, a landline is more than just a phone. It can be a longtime family number, a reliable way to call during emergencies and, for some older or disabled people, an important connection to the outside world.
That’s why a Durham man, Martin Pifer, says he was concerned after receiving a notice that his traditional landline service could soon be discontinued. Pifer says his family has had the same phone number for generations.
