Over 150 people gathered Saturday in Durham’s historic Hayti neighborhood to demand Duke make further financial contributions to the Durham community through an additional minimum wage increase and payments to the city.
The daylong Durham Dreams: Worker and Community Convening event was hosted by a collaboration of workers unions and community groups, including Durham Rising and the Union of Southern Service Workers. Duke quickly became a large focus for attendees.
“Duke has built all of its success on the back of Durhamites,” said Ananda Ghosh, a teacher at Githens Middle School. “We’re going to take on Duke to get our fair share for the community and start really improving Durham.”…
