Governor Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 Alabama counties today as Hurricane Isaias rapidly intensifies in the Gulf of Mexico. The dangerous storm is projected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday, bringing heavy rain, storm surge, and potential tornadoes to coastal communities. This marks the first hurricane of the quiet 2026 Atlantic season to threaten the United States mainland.

Mandatory evacuations are now in effect for Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Dauphin Island as Hurricane Isaias strengthens and shifts eastward, threatening Alabama's coast with life-threatening conditions.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Isaias became the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season Thursday morning, reaching Category 1 strength in the Gulf. The storm is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane before landfall, then weaken quickly after moving inland. Significant impacts are expected along the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. By Sunday, the weakened post-tropical system is expected to bring a steady rain to Indiana.
