Topeka-area auto clerk sentenced for role in odometer rollback scheme
A former title clerk for I-70 Auto Auction in western Shawnee County was sentenced to three months probation last month for a federal crime. U.S. District Judge John W. Broomes imposed that sentence Sept. 1 in Wichita upon Melanie D. Oberhelman, 53, who had pleaded guilty June 1 to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, which is a felony, court records showed. Disabled Navy Veteran Killed by Drunk Driver Whose Blood-Alcohol Level Three Times Legal Limit
A man has pleaded guilty in a drunk-driving crash that killed a disabled veteran earlier this year. Prosecutors want him to serve prison time. Lawrence Grover, 63, a Navy veteran who served in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm, died May 9 in Wichita, Kan., after a truck crashed into him while he was crossing the road. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.
