Iowa universities fall in latest U.S. News global rankings

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s two largest public universities slipped in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings, which measure schools worldwide based largely on research performance and academic reputation.

The 2026-27 rankings, released Tuesday, evaluated more than 2,250 universities across more than 100 countries using research-focused metrics, including publications, citations and international collaboration.

The University of Iowa was the highest-ranked institution in the state, coming in at No. 249 globally. The ranking marks a decline from No. 238 last year and a significant drop from No. 128 a decade ago in 2016…
