Trial will be reset for Alabama man charged with trying to kill 3 officers

CEDAR RAPIDS — A judge Monday agreed to reset the trial for an Alabama man who is charged with trying to kill three officers during a high-speed chase on Dec. 31, 2025, in Eastern Iowa.

Samuel Reese III, 32, of Center Point, Alabama, during a case management conference, asked 6th Judicial District Judge Ian Thornhill for a continuance, saying he still needed all the discovery — evidence — in the case and needed more time to prepare because he is representing himself at trial.

Thornhill said he would set a new trial date later, after Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks, who is the lead prosecutor on the case and wasn’t in court Monday, had a chance to weigh in on the new date…
