CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The American Red Cross says it’s facing an emergency blood shortage from a steep decline in supply since the end of May.
It says hospitals see a higher demand for blood during the summer months, when people are more likely to suffer outdoor or recreational injuries.
The summer is also when the Red Cross sees fewer donations, with busier schedules and school blood drives out of season. Since blood donations have a limited shelf life, it cannot be stockpiled through the slower months…
