Instructure reaches deal with hackers; Iowa universities resume Canvas use

IOWA CITY — A week after the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and thousands of other school districts and college campuses nationwide learned their student data had been breached via a cyberattack on Instructure, which owns and operates the popular Canvas learning system, the tech company Monday announced it’s “reached an agreement” with the hackers.

As part of Instructure’s deal with the “unauthorized actor involved,” the company said all stolen data “was returned to us” and it received digital confirmation of data destruction via “shred logs.”

“We have been informed that no Instructure customers will be extorted as a result of this incident, publicly or otherwise,” according to Instructure’s statement on its agreement with the hackers. “This agreement covers all impacted Instructure customers, and there is no need for individual customers to attempt to engage with the unauthorized actor.”…
