Tempe police are investigating the shooting, according to AZ Family, which reported that a suspect fired rounds that struck a car and a building in the neighborhood. The outlet, citing police, said the shooting caused no injuries despite the gunfire striking the vehicle and structure. Details about a suspect description or possible motive have not been released.
A Neighborhood Packed With Students And Commuters
The intersection sits less than a mile east of ASU’s main Tempe campus, which projected record enrollment topping 55,500 on-campus students for the 2025–2026 academic year, according to Arizona State University. The area is also just a block north of Apache Boulevard, a major East Valley corridor served by the Valley Metro Light Rail line connecting Tempe to Phoenix and Mesa, per Culdesac Tempe. Tempe Police maintain an Apache Substation at 1855 E. Apache Boulevard, less than a mile east of the Lemon Street and Stanley Place intersection, per the City of Tempe. The substation houses patrol divisions and property evidence facilities serving North and East Tempe.
Potential Legal Exposure Under Shannon’s Law
Arizona’s so-called Shannon’s Law, codified as A.R.S. § 13-3107, makes it a Class 6 felony punishable by up to three years in prison to fire a gun within municipal limits with criminal negligence, according to the Salwin Law Group. The statute was enacted in 1999 after the stray-bullet death of 14-year-old Shannon Smith in Phoenix, and it applies to reckless discharges that strike buildings or vehicles like those hit in Saturday’s shooting.
