Audit: 18 Phoenix police officers collectively earned $5.3M over 2 years

The top 18 overtime earners within the Phoenix Police Department over two years collectively added $5.3 million to their paychecks — an average of about $294,000 per officer, according to a city audit.

The January report found the department lacked an effective overtime tracking process, which often led to oversight issues and multiple officers getting paid twice or more between January 2022 and April 2024.

Auditors identified extreme examples among the top earners. There were 94 times officers worked more than 20 hours of overtime in a day, one officer worked 98 hours of overtime in a week and another officer averaged 61 hours of overtime every week for a year, the report said…
