Scottsdale’s Old West BBQ Saloon Locals Still Love Today

You know what I love about living in Arizona (besides everything, of course)? It’s all of the well-established restaurants, saloons, hotels, and other establishments that have been around for many, many decades. One such place is Handlebar J, known as “Scottsdale’s Original Rib House.” Since 1966, Handlebar J Scottsdale has been an icon in town, and I absolutely love it.

A True Old West Institution in Scottsdale

Handlebar J was named after one of the original owners, named Joannie “J” Lautz. She owned it with her husband, George. In the mid-1970s, Brick and Gwen Herndon, with their three young boys, took over, and there was a grand opening celebration on Sept. 15, 1975. The Herndon family also has musically inclined members, and in 1986, The Herndon Brothers Band was formed. Ray Herndon, the youngest of the Herndon sons, was a member of Lyle Lovett’s band. I love the backstory to this iconic and historic Scottsdale restaurant.

Handlebar J has an Old West feel and has attracted numerous celebrities over the years. If you look around the place, you’ll notice the rustic walls, flooring, and decor, like cowboy hats and cow horns hanging from the rafters. This is the epitome of a country bar, from the decor to the food to the music and more.

When you walk in, you’ll pass through the outdoor seating area with tables, chairs, and barstools set up by the bar’s open windows. This is a great spot if you just want to enjoy the Arizona weather or need a break from all of the fun inside.

If you’re here for a meal, like I was one recent afternoon, you may choose to sit inside. I love the rustic feel, the dim lighting, and the variety of interesting decor on the wall. There’s just so much to look at! And in one corner of the room is the Handlebar J stage, where talented bands play most nights.

BBQ Favorites That Keep Locals Coming Back

As for food, this is the type of place that arguably has some of the best BBQ in Arizona. Whether you’re craving chicken wings, HBJ’s Famous BBQ Baby Back Ribs, or a pulled pork sandwich, come hungry. And do yourself a favor and order a side of sweet potato fries to pair with your meal — absolutely delicious!…
