Update on College of Charleston 106 Coming Street Project

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — One of Charleston’s oldest and most significant public burial grounds lies in the center of plans for a new residence hall for the College of Charleston.

Community members gathered to weigh in for a Design and Commemoration Charrette on the project to discuss how to value the deaths of those who lay to rest at 106 Coming Street, and those concerned are demanding that their stories not be buried again.

“We haven’t grappled with who actually has the right to decide what is respectful commemoration,” Millicent Brown, a member of the Community Engagement Council and member of Protect and Respect the Bodies Coalition, said.
