Public asked to report sightings of rare dolphin in Charleston waters: LMMN

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN) is asking for the public’s help to report sightings of Koa, a rare bottlenose dolphin living in Charleston-area waters.

LMMN initially received reports of Koa in March 2025 and discovered that the dolphin was missing its tail flukes. The network says this is an extremely uncommon injury for a free-swimming dolphin to survive in the wild long-term.

The dolphin has been seen in Charleston waters over the past few months and the network is asking for the public’s help to monitor Koa’s condition…
