NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — North Charleston is embarking on what city leaders describe as a generational effort to reshape how the city grows.
“The city’s zoning ordinance was adopted in 1974,” said Tim Macholl, the city’s director of planning and zoning. “We’ve been working off of a boilerplate zoning ordinance that many towns and cities across the state were using. And it has been amended, it’s been updated, it’s been changed. Parts have been deleted. Others have been added over the years to make it work. And it has produced the city as we know it at this time.”
City staff expects North Charleston’s population to grow by 30,000 residents over the next 10 to 15 years. Officials say the UDO would serve as a new rulebook for what can be built where, and how, to make zoning rules clearer, more comprehensive and more user-friendly to guide future growth…
