MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) — For Alyssa Caponi, a trip to the grocery store should be a routine part of raising a family of seven, but because her nearly 2-year-old daughter, Rosa, has significant special needs, something as simple as a Costco run can become a challenge.
“I just want to be able to take my daughter with me just like I take my other four children,” Caponi said. Rosa has 1p36 deletion syndrome, a rare chromosomal disorder caused by a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 1. The condition can affect development, movement, muscle tone and other areas of the body, and Rosa is unable to safely sit independently in a traditional shopping cart.
