Lowcountry Oyster Festival celebrates its 40th year

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD)- The Lowcountry Oyster Festival, deemed one of the world’s largest oyster festivals, draws thousands to Boone Hall Plantation each year to enjoy steamed oysters by-the-bucket, food trucks and live music.

Friends and family travel from all around the country for this event, which celebrated its 40th year on Sunday.

“I’m super excited, yes I came here after college in the late ’90s and Curt and I decided we wanted to come back to the oyster festival and see the 40th anniversary,” said Renee Shifflett, who is visiting from Virginia.

While some people like their oysters steamed — “I can’t do raw anymore. Steamed, definitely steamed,” Shifflett said. Some don’t care. “I can eat any kind of oyster,” said Charleston resident, Sherri Sprinkle.

No matter how you like to eat them, there’s plenty to go around at the festival.

“We have about 50,000 oysters. It’s a lot of oysters,” said Charleston Restaurant Foundation member, Jonathan Kish.

Kish says over the years it’s grown tremendously, “It’s the largest oyster festival in the world. The largest recycling event as far as oysters go.”
