Emergency response certification classes offered in February

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — Community members interested in receiving Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training can sign up for classes scheduled for Feb. 12-17 by the Charleston County Emergency Management Department.

Classes will teach essential skills such as fire safety, disaster preparedness, basic first aid, light search and rescue, and more. Advanced CERT training classes will also be offered for people who wish to volunteer with the Emergency Operations Center or support disaster response efforts in the county.

There are four advanced course options:

  1. Public Relations: Volunteers will assist CCEMD staff at public relations events, engage with potential CERT members, and provide information on disaster preparedness.
  2. EOC Support: Volunteers will help in the overall operations of the Emergency Operations Center during a disaster, perform administrative work and operational coordination, and help ensure smooth operations.
  3. Shelter Operations: assist partner agencies and county staff in staffing and operations of hurricane shelters during a disaster.
  4. Logistics Support: Learn to coordinate and deliver supplies to stakeholders, shelters, and other individuals during a disaster. May also participate in initial damage assessment and support operational readiness outside of a disaster, which requires moderate physical effort.
