‘They deserve to be heard’: Conservation groups challenge zoning exemption for McClellanville sand mine

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Local conservation groups are challenging a zoning exemption for a sand mine in McClellanville that has seen ongoing pushback from the community.

Sitting about 900 feet from Lofton Road and Saint James Santee Elementary and Middle School, conservation advocates and residents are concerned about the 2-acre sand mine’s impact on the nearby school, the environment, and wildlife.

In their latest opposition, the South Carolina Environmental Law Project, Friends of Coastal South Carolina, and the Coastal Conservation League are challenging Charleston County’s Board of Zoning Appeals’ administrative decision that their previously filed appeal was “untimely” and shouldn’t be heard by the board…
