‘Long time coming’: North Charleston opens new Gethsemani Community Center

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Dozens joined the city of North Charleston as they broke ground on the new Gethsemani Community Center Tuesday morning.

Located in the heart of North Charleston’s Union Heights community, residents will have the opportunity to use the space as a hub for connection, health and enrichment designed to serve residents of all ages. The new center is replacing the older center right next to the new one that so many held close to their heart. That original building was built in the 1950s and predates the city of North Charleston.

Mayor Reggie Burgess, who grew up in the area and spent his childhood at the older facility, says the groundbreaking represents more than just a construction project…
